Former Great Britain sprinter Nicola Sanders believes that athletics authorities need to get tough with Russia and make sure they fulfil criteria before they can compete. Calls have been made for Russia to be excluded from this summers Olympics in Rio de Janeiro after 14 of their athletes tested positive for banned substances when samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics were re-examined.Russian media named the 14, two of whom won silver medals in the 4x400 metres relay that year - a race in which Sanders was part of a Great Britain quartet that finished fifth. Team GB could be awarded two bronze medals from 2008, after the Olympic Committee (ROC) was notified by the IOC that 14 of the 31 athletes are Russian. And Sanders told Sky Sports News HQ: What the authorities must do is set out a list of things the Russian authorities have to do in order to let their athletes compete. They cant just say youre definitely out, theyve got to have a list of criteria that theyve got to meet. Sanders in action for Great Britain at the World Athletics Championships in 2011 From one side of it, you dont know that every single Russian athlete has been taking drugs. Obviously it has been suggested it is a state-run thing, so theres a culture thing there, but you cant necessarily ban the whole team. But, on the other side, there is such a big problem there that you have to do something. Unless theyre going above and beyond to try and get on top of it and you can be sure of it, then they cant be allowed back in.Sanders retired in 2014 without ever winning an Olympic medal, and she said: Two out of the four athletes from the 4x400m are on this list that have supposedly tested positive. One of them in particular we know had a ban before, so we were already suspecting of them. You have to put it to the back of your mind when youre on the start line; you just have to race whos there.Sanders recently spoke to Sky Sports about her career as an athlete Also See: GB could win medals from Beijing 08 Sanders talks about her career 14 Russian athletes suspected of doping Billy McKinney Jersey .
