EDMONTON -- Fred Stamps has 431 career receptions, 6,812 yards and 42 touchdowns, but right now the Edmonton slotback would trade it all in for one victory for the struggling Eskimos. The 31-year-old receiver had eight catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the teams heartbreaking 30-27 loss to Saskatchewan last Saturday, statistics that moved Stamps into the top five of all-time Eskimo receivers for catches and yards, and top eight in touchdowns. Yet there he sat, looking as forlorn as any player possibly could; his individual performance meaning very little. "Id give it all for a victory," he said of the individual stats. "I appreciate all the history and tradition. I look up to all the guys who were here before me and its an honour to be mentioned with those guys, but I want a victory." The Eskimos have now lost six straight since beating Hamilton in week two of the CFL season. Their last four games they have lost by a combined total of 12 points. Now they face the 6-2 Calgary Stampeders in the annual Labour Day back-to-back series beginning Monday in Calgary. Destined for the Eskimos Wall of Honour and likely the CFL Hall of Fame, the six-foot, 188-pound Stamps is finding the Eskimos 1-7 season and their recent string of narrow losses difficult to deal with, admitting frustration is mounting in the dressing room. "It is so tough (to take)," he said. "Im just so hungry right now, I want to win. I know theres a lot of history and tradition (with the individual stats) but I just want to win right now." And hes been doing everything in his power to try to get the Eskimos those elusive wins. He leads the league in receiving yards (684) and touchdowns (six) and has been the teams most consistent offensive player all year. Just as he has throughout his seven years in the CFL. "Freddies a tremendous player," said quarterback Mike Reilly, who has found Stamps 36 times this season. "Its rare to see a veteran guy, who has had so much success in this league, who is still willing to put in the effort and the time that a rookie whos trying to make the team would. He shows up as if hes still fighting for a roster spot every day." Reilly, a first-year Eskimo, said the veteran is always talking to him, asking about how to run certain routes, how to cut to increase the chances of a successful play or whether doing things one way or another would work. "To see that in a veteran guy whos had so much success and still remains so humble and hungry to continue to get better is rare," Reilly said. "Geroy Simon was like that. Thats what separates the guys who are really great from the guys who are just really, really good. And Freddie is truly great." In an effort to shore up a disappointing defence that is giving up an average of 30 points a game, the Eskimos signed import defensive lineman Nekos Brown and non-import defensive back Ryan Hinds on Wednesday. Hinds was selected in the second round (13th overall) of the 2009 CFL Canadian draft by Hamilton. He had 71 defensive tackles, 10 special teams tackles and an interception in three seasons (2010-12) with the Tiger-Cats. Brown played two games earlier this season with the Toronto Argonauts recording one tackle and one sack. Ed Oliver Youth Jersey . EASTS THIRD SEED (RAPTORS OR BULLS?): With Sundays Raptors win at Detroit coupled with the Bulls loss in New York, suddenly the Toronto Raptors are back in a tie for third place and hold the tiebreaker for the spot with two games to go. The opportunity to play either Washington or Charlotte rather than the Brooklyn Nets is a real possibility right now and keeps the pressure on both teams to play out the regular season trying to win outright. It should be fun to watch how both of these squads approach the urgency of that. Players always say they dont care who they play as long as theyre in the playoffs, but coaches really care because theyre the ones doing extensive prep for these match-ups and know all of the ins and outs as they pertain to the good and bad matchups. Theres still lots to play for. 2. WESTERN CONFERENCE: In the East, only two teams (Indiana and Miami) will finish with 50 wins while weve got five teams with 50 wins already in the West and another three (Golden State, Dallas and Memphis) with a chance to get to 50 in the next few days. Pretty remarkable to see how strong this conference is. Consider the fact that the ninth place team in that conference (Phoenix) will come close to 50 and be playing golf in a few days if they dont get a few breaks here. Its been a terrific year and the playoffs in the West will be hotly-contested matchups. 3. MASON PLUMLEE (Nets): He wont win the Rookie of the Year award, but the more I watch him play the more I love his game. This guy plays hard all of the time, has nice bounce to his game and can score in the lane for you. Has a nose for the ball with greaat rebounding instincts.dddddddddddd With various injuries to the Nets this year hes been able to get on the floor and has taken advantage of the playing time and looks quite comfortable now. Hes earned coach Jason Kidds trust and has a valuable role off the bench for them. Good development for him and their team. 4. ANDREW NICHOLSON (Magic): His playing time and his numbers are down this season and the second year Canadian hasnt been able to get any sort of rhythm going at all. He is your classic tweener - a combo 3-4 who has good post and mid-range skills yet struggles (29 per cent) with his three-point shooting and his handle in the open court still needs improvement. Big off-season coming up for him as he needs to add a few tools to his tool kit to create a niche for himself as a pro. He had some solid moments as a rookie but theyve been few and far between as a sophomore. Hes a worker and plays all out all the time. I have no doubt that hell pay the price in the next six months and come back for Year 3 as a better player. 5. MO WILLIAMS (Blazers): Even though his career numbers are off this season, his role is smaller for him in Portland yet hes been a terrific addition to their team. Still a solid playmaker (4-plus assists per game) and can score (10 ppg) and shoot the three (37 percent) while providing veteran leadership and savvy to the backcourt. His knack for making the high percentage play and knowing/accepting his role in their scheme has helped coach Terry Stotts bring this team along and enjoy a fun season. Sometimes guys just fit and other times they dont - hes been an ideal fit for them. ' ' '
