CANASTOTA, N.Y. -- As the youngest of nine children, Evander Holyfield never had a chance when he was a kid.I got beat by everybody in my family. They beat me in everything, Holyfield said. I learned how to win. Its in my DNA. I changed that into an inspiration. I was able to whip other people because of this.Whip them he did in an impressive boxing career that spanned more than three decades -- 160 wins as an amateur, 44 more as a pro -- and included undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight titles, not to mention oh-so-memorable fights against Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe.Boxings only four-time world heavyweight champion, dubbed The Real Deal, now has a new moniker -- Hall of Famer. Holyfield was selected Tuesday along with eight others for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.Im excited, Holyfield said. It shows my work didnt go unnoticed, things that I accomplished. Its good to know that everybody else was watching. Thats a great thing.Others inducted on June 11 in Canastota, New York: three-division champion Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico; super flyweight champion Johnny Tapia; Australian trainer Johnny Lewis; judge Jerry Roth; journalist-broadcaster Steve Farhood; broadcaster Barry Tompkins; and posthumous honorees Eddie Booker and ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr.Holyfield, 54, was born in Atmore in southernmost Alabama. He credits his mother with steering him in the right direction, most importantly making sure he became immersed in a culture that taught him discipline and respect at a young age after the family moved to a hardscrabble neighborhood in Atlanta. She was there and shes the one that kept me from quitting, Holyfield said. At one time I did want to quit, but because of my mom I didnt. My mom had a tough life. She could have given up but made sure my life was going to be better than hers. When I look at it, my mom really was the real deal. After winning Olympic bronze in 1984, Holyfield turned pro and in only his 12th fight defeated Dwight Qawi for the WBA cruiserweight title. He became unified champion with knockout wins over IBF champion Rickey Parkey and WBC champion Carlos DeLeon.Holyfield then moved up to the heavyweight division and captured the WBC-WBA-IBF titles in 1990 with a third-round knockout of Buster Douglas and made successful defenses against George Foreman, Bert Cooper and Larry Holmes.Bowe won the undisputed heavyweight championship on points from Holyfield in 1992 in a fight that stamped Holyfield as a warrior like few others. Holyfield was stunned repeatedly by several combinations thrown by the bigger Bowe early in the 10th round and then rallied to dominate the second half of the round. Bowe came back to dominate the 11th and withstood Holyfields final rally in the 12th to win a unanimous decision.Holyfield beat Bowe the next year on points to capture the IBF and WBA titles. He regards that first fight against Bowe as one of his greatest. That kind of made people realize -- hes not just a boxer, hes a fighter as well, gave me a lot of respect, Holyfield said. I proved I was tough. People realized that although I didnt say much, they knew that I meant business.Holyfield upset Tyson for the WBA title in 1996 and won the rematch the next year in what will always be remembered as the Bite Fight. It ended with Tyson disqualified for biting off a piece of Holyfields right ear, then biting his left ear.I like winning. Winning was enough for me, Holyfield said. I was the undefeated, undisputed cruiserweight champion, and I was four-time heavyweight champion of the world. What more can you say? You did what you were supposed to do.Barrera won his first 43 bouts and captured the NABF super flyweight title before winning world championships in three weight divisions in the 1990s.This is the best news for me, Barrera said. Im very happy. I am excited to go to Canastota.Lennons son, who has followed in his late fathers footsteps, will be among the excited participants on induction day. That is amazing news, said Jimmy Lennon Jr., also a ring announcer. I think it is so extremely meaningful for my family. My mom was brought to tears when she heard that he was nominated. She is 94 years old now and I guarantee you she is going to be at the ceremony with so much pride. Our whole family will. We are thrilled and honored.Nike Vapormax Salg . Vapormax Svart Herre Norge .C. -- After a listless first half, the Washington Wizards used a big third quarter run to beat the Charlotte Bobcats Bradley Beal scored 21 points and the Wizards used a 17-0 run in the third quarter to take control of what had been a close game and beat the Bobcats 97-83 on Tuesday night. The first leg of the greatest Heisman Trophy race in recent memory seemed to take place in sand or mud.The projected favorites werent awful by any measure, but not much came easily. Christian McCaffrey did some Christian McCaffrey things Friday at Stanford Stadium, including recording touchdown runs of 41 and 35 yards, but he had only 50 rush yards on his other 20 carries against a salty Kansas State defense. After a slow start, Leonard Fournette accounted for 68.5 percent of LSUs offensive production at Lambeau Field and finished with 138 yards on 23 carries in a loss to Wisconsin. Oklahomas Baker Mayfield completed his first nine pass attempts in a loss to Houston, a team buoyed by its own Heisman candidate, Greg Ward Jr. Clemsons Deshaun Watson didnt display his usual precision and dominance at Auburn, but he still fired a huge, fourth-quarter touchdown and re-established his chemistry with wideout Mike Williams. Its still quite possible that one of the top four candidates wins the Heisman in December. But Week 1 was underwhelming, according to their skyscraping standards. Fortunately, another group of players picked up the star power slack. Most impressively, these players did so in their first collegiate games.Week 1 will be remembered for dazzling debuts by freshmen, especially quarterbacks. Fittingly, opening weekend ended with Florida State redshirt freshman quarterback Deondre Francois rallying the Seminoles to the biggest comeback in team history against Ole Miss.Heres a look at some of the most impressive introductions by college footballs next batch of potential household names.Texas QB Shane BuecheleHe was the quarterback Texas fans wanted to see, and he led the offense they wanted to see. It all came together Sunday against Notre Dame, as Buechele passed for 280 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in Texas overtime win. Buechele, the first freshman quarterback to start a Texas opener since 1944, didnt flinch in the national spotlight and made big throws all night. He sparked a revamped Texas offense to 26 first downs and 517 yards.Buechele finished with a QBR of 83.1 and added 33 rush yards and a touchdown on five carries. Tyrone Swoopes will and should continue to have a big role, but this is Buecheles offense.Georgia QB Jacob EasonIts hard to upstage the triumphant return of Nick Chubb to Georgias offensive backfield, but Eason nearly did so with his debut. Although Georgia has an older, potentially safer option in Greyson Lambert, Bulldogs fans yearned for Eason, and he delivered, as he completed eight of 12 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, including a beautiful, 51-yard strike to Isaiah McKenzie. Although coach Kirby Smart could continue to platoon Lambert and Eason, the teams future is the freshman, who avoided an interception against North Carolina and looked comfortable.Chubbs production is the biggest reason to be excited, but he shouldnt log 32 carries a game. If Eason provides a consistent downfield passing threat to complement Chubb, Georgia can lean on its offense for big things this fall.Florida State QB Deondre FrancoisIf Florida State goes on to the College Football Playoff, we will remember Francois standing his ground despite an impending hit from Marquis Haynes and firing a 16-yard touchdown to Travis Rudolph with 28 seconds left in the first half Monday against Ole Miss.ddddddddddddThe scoring strike set off a 33-0 Florida State run that erased a 22-point deficit.Thrust into a starting role after Sean Maguires preseason injury, Francois overcame early struggles to show toughness, talent and poise. He finished with 420 yards passing and two touchdowns on 33-of-52 passing. Francois sealed the win with a 20-yard run, which gave him 59 rushing yards for the game.Alabama QB Jalen HurtsHurts showed why he was the talk of Tide training camp when he accounted for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) in a season-opening blowout of USC. His age and skill set are unique for a Nick Saban quarterback, but Hurts gives Alabamas offense a different look while answering a familiar question at the quarterback position. No Tide quarterback had recorded multiple passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns in a game since Tyler Watts in 2001.Although Hurts passing numbers (6-of-11, 118 yards, 49.4 QBR) werent astounding, he didnt look overwhelmed by the moment. Its important for Alabama to find clarity at quarterback before a Week 3 trip to recent nemesis Ole Miss.Houston DT Ed OliverBig 12 coaches thought Houstons offense could hang with Oklahomas, but the Sooners rushing attack of Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon?proved to be the difference. Thanks to Oliver, possibly the most decorated recruit in program history, Houston shut down the OU ground game and allowed just 70 yards on 26 carries (2.7 ypc). Oliver triggered the pass rush with two of Houstons five sacks and led defensive linemen in the game with seven tackles.Houstons defense was vastly underrated entering the season, and Olivers instant emergence helps offset some key personnel losses as the Cougars make a potential playoff push. Some other notable freshmen performances included:Florida State K Ricky Aguayo: Different Aguayo, same results. Ricky followed his record-setting brother, Roberto, with a record-setting Seminoles debut against Ole Miss and became the first kicker at Kicker U to make six field goals in a game. No other FBS kicker made more than four field goals in Week 1.Oregon LB Troy Dye: The Ducks defense remains a work-in-progress, but Dye provided a major spark Saturday, with 4.5 tackles for loss, the most in the FBS in Week 1, as well as a blocked field goal and 11 total tackles against UC Davis. He earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors.Minnesota DE Taiyon Devers: Few defenders impacted a Week 1 game more than Devers, who recorded two sacks and two forced fumbles in Minnesotas 30-23 win over Oregon State. Both forced fumbles led to Gophers touchdowns.Iowa DE Anthony Nelson: Why wasnt Devers the Big Tens freshman of the week? Because Nelson upstaged him with 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup in Iowas opening win over Miami (Ohio). Both forced fumbles led to Hawkeyes touchdowns.Ohio State RB Mike Weber: Despite lingering depth concerns, Ohio State appears to be in good shape with Weber, who gained 136 yards on only 17 carries in his collegiate debut against Bowling Green. At 5-foot-10 and 212 pounds, Weber is a bowling ball of a back who isnt much fun to tackle. ' ' '
