DALLAS -- Unsigned for two years since the release of the horrific video of him punching his then-fiancee, Ray Rice says his second chance has come through his choice to speak out against domestic violence. The former Baltimore running back still wants to resume his NFL career, and he doesnt begrudge Greg Hardy for getting the opportunity that he so far hasnt. Rice just wishes the former Dallas defensive end had used the platform of playing the same way Rice has tried to make amends. What I wanted to see him do with his second chance would have been a lot different, Rice said Wednesday after joining a Big 12 Conference-sponsored panel to discuss violence against women on college campuses.I would have loved to see him advocate and be a positive force and take the right steps going forward, he said. I wish Greg nothing but success in life. I never wish bad on anyone. And I hope that he can take some steps to move in the right direction going forward.Hardys one season with the Cowboys didnt do much to quell criticism the team received for signing him after his domestic violence case in North Carolina. The former Carolina Panthers standout made light of the 9/11 attacks on Twitter, had an inappropriate comment about New England quarterback Tom Bradys wife and a physical altercation with a Cowboys assistant coach during a game. After photos of Hardys bruised ex-girlfriend were released, his production dropped significantly. Dallas owner and general manager Jerry Jones ultimately decided not to re-sign him after initially answering critics by saying he wanted to give Hardy a long-term deal. The same week that the now-unsigned Hardy was arrested on a cocaine possession charge in a Dallas suburb, Rice made his latest appearance to discuss his life since the videos that derailed his career .The first showed his now-wife, Janay Rice, being dragged unconscious out of a hotel elevator in New Jersey. The second showed the punch that knocked her out, leading to his release by the Ravens and an indefinite suspension from the NFL. That ban was overturned in court, but another team hasnt signed him.A Super Bowl winner following the 2012 season, Rice played his last game on Dec. 29, 2013.I think the one thing I can take from it is Im not out there saying I deserve a second chance, said Rice, who has 6,180 yards rushing in six seasons. I used to have control over that, my playing days. But I know thats out of my control. And I think what I control now is how many people can I help, whether Im playing or not.Rice speaks to high school and college athletes, repeating his refrain that he spent too much time trying to be the man instead of a man. He says there are no excuses for domestic violence, alcohol or otherwise -- lessons he says he learned with therapy and other conversations with experts on the topic. One of the participants at the Dallas session was Brenda Tracy, who has publicly taken her story of rape by Oregon State football players to teams including those at Baylor following the schools sexual assault scandal. To those who question his motives, Rice points to his stable family life -- his wife, 4-year-old daughter and infant son.I dont have a situation at home thats broken, Rice said. I have a wife and I have a son and I have a daughter that have to grow up with their father, who made a terrible decision in life. And I have to explain that to them. After the Big 12 panel, Rice was asked what he would say to Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon, who was suspended for a year after punching a woman in the face in a restaurant but is in his second season with the Sooners. Mixon hasnt addressed his case publicly, and Rice said thats an important step. While there is video of Mixons incident, it hasnt been nearly as widely viewed as those involving Rice. The more I learned about it, it shouldnt take a visual to understand what domestic violence is, Rice said. You have to get it. It shouldnt take a video. Youre just taking full responsibility. And I had to learn that. It wasnt about the drinking and things like that. No, I was wrong. Thats it.And if thats not enough to get Rice back on the field, hes OK with it.I would know that I didnt give up, said Rice, who turns 30 in January. You will never hear the words out of my mouth saying I gave up. I want to play football. Im not going to say I dont. But I think me being here today is going to have a greater impact than any touchdown Ill ever score, or have ever scored.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Schuyler Dixon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/apschuylerVapormax Flyknit 3 Cheap .ca NHL Power Rankings for the second straight week, ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Colorado Avalanche. NEW YORK -- The Yankees commemorated Mark Teixeiras eight seasons in pinstripes, a stretch that included a pivotal role in the clubs run to the 2009 World Series championship, with a ceremony at Yankee Stadium before Sundays 5-2 loss?loss to the Baltimore Orioles. On an overcast, 60-degree day -- and with the team out of playoff contention on the final day of the regular season -- the ceremony was sparsely attended, but Teixeira received rousing ovations from the fans both during the ceremony and after his final round of batting practice as a Yankee earlier in the day.It was a little weird, but I think because I dealt with it for the last two months and understood what, I was kind of counting down the days, Teixeira said. I prepared for it, mentally and emotionally. I prepared for it, so it wasnt as weird as I thought it was going to be. It was like, now that day is finally here.Teixeira announced earlier this year he would retire after this season. It was huge, Teixeira said. I wanted to make sure that I got to say goodbye and thank you one last time. I couldnt have asked for anything more but a win. That would have been nice. Absolutely, that would have been nice. But I got a chance to say goodbye, which was very important.Accompanied by his wife, Leigh, and their three young children, Teixeira was honored with a video tribute that featured such highlights as his home run that ended Game 2 of the 2009 American League Division Series against the Minnesota Twins and the game-ending grand slam he hit Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.He was recognized for his charitable work with Harlem RBI, to which he has made sizable monetary donations, and was presented with a framed replica of his No. 25 jersey by Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. He also received a base that was signed by all of his teammates;?CC Sabathia and Brett Gardner, the only remaining members of thee 2009 championship team on the Yankees roster, presented it.ddddddddddddTeixeira, who was batting fifth and playing first base, grounded out in his first at-bat, but he made a sparkling play, diving to rob Matt Wieters of a potential double, to lead off the second inning. He was removed from the game with one out in the seventh inning and received a standing ovation from the home crowd. After tipping his cap, he received hugs and congratulations in the dugout.?Tyler Austin?took over at first base.I told Joe, listen, I wouldnt be able to top what happened on Wednesday night no matter what, Teixeira said of Yankees manager Joe Girardi. So knowing that, after my third at-bat I let him know. Whatever happened. If I hit a home run, I probably would have left after that home run, but after the third at-bat, I told him I was ready. He came out after the seventh and said lets get one out. He took me out.In his eight seasons with the Yankees, Teixeira batted .248 with 206 home runs, 622 RBIs and an .823 OPS. Overall, he was a .269 career hitter with 409 home runs (he is one of only five switch-hitters in baseball history with at least 400 home runs), 1,298 RBIs and an OPS of .870. He is also a three-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner at first base.Teixeira played his first four seasons for the Rangers, split 2007 with Texas and the Braves and spent 2008 with Atlanta and the?Los Angeles Angels. But he said he would always be a Yankee.Theyre the team that Ill always be remembered for, I think, Teixeira said. In my mind, Im going to live here for a really, really long time and be coming to Yankee Stadium and take my kids to games here. Hopefully, if they honor the 2009 World Series sometime soon, Ill be back with all my old teammates. ' ' '
