World No.1 Jason Day and former Masters champion Adam Scott have fallen two shots short as Patrick Reed claimed the opening US PGA Tour Playoff event at Bethpage Black.Day shot a two-under-69 and Scott could only manage an even par round of 71 as the pair finished at seven under in a tie for fourth in The Barclays.Reed, who started the final round one behind Rickie Fowler, was able to put together a round of 70 to finish at nine-under, one clear of Sean OHair (66) and Emiliano Grillo (69).Reed claimed his fifth US Tour win and first since January 2015.Day was left to lament another week of wayward driving off the tee, finishing last in accuracy of the 79 players who made the cut.I dont think there was a tee shot that I felt comfortable over to be honest, Day said.Every time I was standing over the ball, I couldnt feel like it was going to be a good shot. I was fighting a left shot and I was fighting a right shot. With everything done, stats-wise, I didnt give myself an opportunity off the tee.If I give myself more opportunities to the green, if Im in the fairways, I might have had a good chance.Even though I did hit a lot of greens today, I didnt hit them close enough.Day did provide one highlight in the final round, making a curling 71-foot birdie putt on the 15th to give himself a chance at a late run.But a three-putt for bogey from a similar distance on the next hole ended his hopes.Scott started poorly with back-to-back bogeys but found three birdies in his next seven holes to get back into contention. But two bogeys early on the back nine had him swimming upstream.John Senden ensured he will survive at least one more week in the playoffs with a final round three-under-68 moving him back to even par for the tournament and a tie for 31st.The playoffs are now down to 100 players heading to the Deutsche Bank Championship next week with Day, Scott and Senden to be joined by Marc Leishman and Aaron Baddeley at TPC Boston.Reed ended a frustrating run when he survived two late bogeys.Fellow American Sean OHair (66) and Argentine Emiliano Grillo (69) were joint second on eight-under.Reeds victory was his fifth PGA tour title and first in 19 months. It also secured a spot on the United States team for next months Ryder Cup.He also vaulted to the top of the FedExCup points list after the first of the four playoff events.I have worked pretty hard with my coach for the past couple of weeks, the 26-year-old said in a greenside interview. The game shows Im moving in the right direction but there are some things I need to work on.David Nwaba Jersey .C. -- Chris Thorburn thinks one of the reasons the Winnipeg Jets have been successful under new coach Paul Maurice is that theyre playing together as a team. It was 6-3/4 lengths back to Bonita Bianca in third and another 5 1/2 lengths to Libbys Tail in fourth. Trainer Rudy Rodriguezs runners finished second, third and fourth. The win was the third straight for Miss Sky Warrior after she lost her debut at Belmont in September.Breen said his confidence in Miss Sky Warriors ability to go a distance was based on his belief she would prefer two turns to one.I felt like the two turns was a better [fit], Breen said. Shes a very big filly. I think when she changed leads last time out it was a matter of fatigue from her being a little bit confused about the long backstretch [run].Miss Sky Warrior, under Paco Lopez, led the way into the first turn and set fractions of 23.65 seconds for the quarter and 48.82 for the half-mile with Libbys Tail off her flank.Libbys Tail, under Javier Castellano, crept a little closer around the far turn, but by the quarter pole she began to tire as Jamyson n Ginger, sixth early, launched her bid and moved into second. Straightening away in the stretch, Miss Sky Warrior began to kick clear and Jamyson n Ginger, under Irad Ortiz Jr., began to drift out.ddddddddddddMiss Sky Warrior maintained a straight course, and that proved the difference. Miss Sky Warrior, a daughter of First Samurai bred and owned by Al and Arlene London, covered the 1-1/8 miles in 1:53.34 and returned $13.20 to win as the third choice. We did not have to be on the lead, Breen said. I told Paco to take back. Telling Paco to take back and youre in front by a half-length youre doing okay.It was the second stakes win on the day for Lopez - he also won the Comely with longshot Verves Tale - and the 1,998th win of his career.Coming into the race Kelly told me, you can hold her today and come from behind, either third or fourth, Lopez said. When the gates opened it laid out a little different. The Demoiselle gave Miss Sky Warrior 10 qualifying points to the Kentucky Oaks, which is May 5 at Churchill Downs.Breen said Miss Sky Warrior would ship to south Florida and likely return to the races, potentially at Gulfstream Park, in February or March.Rodriguez and Ortiz both felt that Jamyson n Ginger may have felt the effects of running back three weeks after finishing fifth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Rodriguez said she would get a rest.Bonita Bianca, who rallied from last to finish third, would likely run in route races during Aqueducts winter meet, while Libbys Tail, beaten 12 3/4 lengths when fourth, would likely cut back to one-turn races next year.
