EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Defenceman Robyn Regehr agreed to a two-year, $6 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, passing up free agency this summer to stick with the defending Stanley Cup champions. The Kings announced the deal while the team travelled to Chicago for the start of the Western Conference finals on Saturday. Regehr has appeared in just 12 regular-season games and 13 playoff contests with the Kings, who acquired him from the Buffalo Sabres on April 1 in a trade for two second-round draft picks. But from his first game with the Kings, the 13-year NHL veteran has splendidly filled the physical void left by injured Kings defencemen Willie Mitchell and Matt Greene with relentless, hard-hitting defence and penalty-killing proficiency. Regehr also has three assists while partnering with high-scoring defenceman Drew Doughty. "They told me that they wanted me to be a good defensive defenceman, physical guy, help out on the penalty kill, things like that, so I had a real good understanding of the things they wanted me to work on," Regehr said Thursday before his deal was announced. "(Coach) Darryl (Sutter) had mentioned that they felt they were missing a veteran presence during the season because of injury. To try to come in and help out that way, thats what they felt they needed." The 33-year-old Regehr would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer, but general manager Dean Lombardi previously said he would aggressively attempt to re-sign Regehr before free agency. Regehr has said hes grateful to be with a championship contender after missing the playoffs in his four previous seasons in Calgary and Buffalo, and the Kings are grateful to have a stable veteran presence on the back end. "We needed that defensive presence and that physical guy," Doughty said of Regehr on Wednesday. "For the most part, our D corps wasnt the most physical. We were more good passers. We didnt have that physical presence. In bringing him in, hes helped out a lot. Hes been a great guy to have. We all love him, and hes a big part of where we are right now." Regehrs return in the fall solidifies the Kings blue line during a potentially busy summer. Veteran defenceman Rob Scuderi is an unrestricted free agent, while defencemen Slava Voynov, Jake Muzzin, Alec Martinez and Keaton Ellerby are restricted free agents. Greene has returned to the Kings lineup after a back injury kept him out for almost the entire regular season, while Mitchell wont play at all this season after two knee surgeries. Lombardi has said he doesnt know whether the 36-year-old Mitchell, who will make $3.5 million next season, will be healthy for training camp in the fall. Regehr is in the final days of a five-year, $20 million contract signed when he was with the Calgary Flames, his team for his first 11 NHL seasons. He also played for Canada at the Turin Olympics in 2006. Regehr and Sutter reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals with Calgary in 2004, but lost to Tampa Bay. Regehr hadnt made it past the first round of the post-season again until this spring with the Kings. The speed of Regehrs transition to a major role with the Kings has impressed his coach and teammates, but Regehr acknowledges it wasnt as seamless as it appeared to be. "I wouldnt say it was easy, because theres so many things that are new," Regehr said. "I didnt really know anyone on the team. There were new players, new city, new equipment, new everything. The way that teams play isnt always the same, so youre adapting to that. Its an unsettling feeling. I would say maybe thats the best way to explain it, but you just try to work on as many things as you can."China Jerseys Wholesale . I dont think thats fair. I didnt do it when I was in college. I never talked to anybody in the National Football League until after our bowl game was over.I think in the NFL they have a great rule; youre not allowed to leave your job. If youre in the playoffs you cant go until your season is done. Its tough with the cycle that goes on in college. So, when Ive said that Im not going back to college, theres never going to be an opportunity for me to go back to college, because I have a job. I will not leave a team with three games to go because I got a bigger, better deal somewhere. Thats not the way Im wired and thats not what I would ever do.The way Kelly is wired is a reflection of E. Paul Kelly, his 87-year old father who died Friday night and was laid to rest in Portland, Maine, on Tuesday afternoon.Thats one thing I did learn from my dad, Kelly said. They (the 49ers) made a commitment to me. I made a commitment to them. Im not searching around and looking for other jobs while I have a job. I have a job to take care of, and I would be disingenuous and wouldnt be loyal to the players I coach, and those are the most important people that I deal with on a daily basis. I talk to them about making sacrifices all the time and being all-in and doing all that, and then Im looking to try to go find a job while all this is going on?I will never leave my job. I never have in the past and Im not going to leave my job if I still have games to coach. Thats what my deal is. I have a commitment. I learned that from my father. We can talk about my dad. I made a commitment to -- whether it was a university I was at, I made a commitment to a football team that I was at, and I just wont do that.Despite rampant speculation to the contrary, Kelly insisted for the better part of the past two months that he didnt have any interest in returning to Eugene to coach the Ducks despite his past success there and the Niners current struggles.ddddddddddddSince the 49ers are 1-11, amid an 11-game losing streak, Kelly would have had reason to depart for a better situation. But he made it clear Wednesday that he had no interest in following in the footsteps of former Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino, who left for Arkansas with three games to go in the 2007 season. Before Wednesday, Kelly had mostly stuck to simple a no when asked about his interest in Oregon or any other coaching vacancy, but he had never so forcefully and thoroughly explained why. After Oregon on Wednesday morning?tabbed South Florida coach Willie Taggart to replace Mark Helfrich, Kelly was compelled to go in-depth about how he disagrees with the idea of abandoning a team in the middle of the season for another job.I could never look (safety) Antoine Bethea or (tackle) Joe Staley in the face again and talk to them about commitment, and then if I was the guy that had a job that was offered that I thought was better than the one I had and I took off on them with three games to go, thats just not the way Im wired, Kelly said. I think some guys do it. I would never do it.I dont know why college questions ever come up with me because I would never leave my players before the season ended, and thats what Ive said all along and thats the way Ill always be. So if that precludes me from ever being involved in a college job, then that precludes me from ever being involved in a college job. So hopefully you guys dont ever have to ask that question again.Kelly returned to the Bay Area on Tuesday night after attending his fathers funeral. His players greeted him warmly?Wednesday. Kelly stopped to give a few players a hug as he walked on the field for practice.Minutes earlier, Kelly shared fond memories of his father, providing a rare glimpse into a private life he has doggedly protected. My dad is loyal now, Kelly said. He knows where his son was. So he actually got buried in 49ers gear. He did not want to wear a suit in the coffin. He wore a suit for his whole career as a trial lawyer, but he wanted to wear a 49ers sweatsuit when he passed away. ' ' '
