RIO DE JANEIRO -- Italian Daniele Garozzo stunned top-ranked American Alexander Massialas to win the gold medal Sunday in mens foil fencing.Garozzo beat Massialas -- who was seeking to become the first American man to win at the Olympics in the modern version of the sport -- 15-11 to give Italy its second gold of the Rio Games.Massialas rallied from six points down in the quarterfinals, but he gave up six straight points to Garozzo in the final as the Italian ran away with the match.Still, Massialas is the first individual Olympic medalist the U.S. has produced in mens fencing since Peter Westbrook won a bronze in 1984, and the first U.S. mens foil medal since 1960, when Albie Alexrod won the bronze.Russias Timur Safin took bronze.Few seemed as shocked to see the 11th-ranked Garozzo topple the American more than the fencer himself. Garozzo ditched his mask and ran the length of the piste to salute a Brazilian crowd that had decided to back the underdog.Officials forced a jubilant Garozzo back to the strip before awarding him the 15th and final point. In retrospect, what happened in the final wasnt terribly surprising, since Massialas needed one of the biggest rallies in recent Olympic history simply to reach the semifinals. He cruised to victory in his first two matches before running into Italys Giorgio Avola, who got on a run and jumped ahead 14-8 in a sport in which 15 points clinches victory.Massialas rallied with seven straight points, drawing the crowd to its feet with his winning touch. The highly anticipated semifinal matchup between Massialas and teammate Gerek Meinhardt failed to materialize when Meinhardt lost to Great Britains Richard Kruse 15-13.Garozzo beat Safin 15-8 to earn a shot at the gold medal, while Massialas rolled past Kruse 15-9.Massialas, Meinhardt, Race Imboden and Miles Chamley-Watson, who lost his first match, will compete again Friday as one of the favorites in the team competition.Well all be able to recover and get refocused, Meinhardt said. This is a first baby step of how we want to play as a team. Noah contributed 16 points and nine rebounds.Carmelo Anthony added 25 points and Courtney Lee, a free agent acquisition like Noah, tossed in 15 points. We were sharing the ball a lot and we did a good job of being aggressive, Porzingis said after New York improved to 2-3. We made a lot of good plays for each other. Even though we lost the lead, we still found a way to come back. And thats the kind of basketball we want to be playing.Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek had reprimanded his team for not getting Porzingis the ball enough after a 118-99 home loss to Houston on Wednesday, but credited better spacing to allow Porzingis to roam the perimeter. The Jazz (3-3) could receive a boost from small forward Gordon Hayward, the teams leading scorer last season, who will be making his season debut. Lyles will be up against Noah on Sunday, one of the more physical centers in the league.Treys a talented offensive player, Snyder told the Salt Lake Tribune. He can do things that are unique. He can pass. He can shoot. He can hit the mid-range and three-point shot. (But) he needs to read a situation before he gets the ball.I want him to have an idea of what hes going to do beforehand, so the ball doesnt stick. Hes conscious of that. I want the emphasis to be on his reads. On defense, he has to come out determined and aggressive. If hes behind his man in the post, thats not what we want. We want him in front. We want him to get physically stronger and hold his ground. Not just to absorb contact, but to not get pushed out of the way.I see him continuing to improve.Utah begins its first long road trip of the season as it plays five games in seven nights this week.
