Rory McIlroy is confident he can turn his season around by claiming a third U.S. PGA Championship title in the space of five years.McIlroy won the Irish Open in May and has recorded eight other top-10 finishes in strokeplay events in 2016, but failed to add to his tally of four major titles in the Masters, U.S. Open and the Open. The 28-year-old opted for neutral when asked to describe his 2016 campaign in one word, but feels he can find top gear once more at Baltusrol, especially after Mondays thunderstorm recalled the soft conditions which prevailed for his breakthrough U.S. Open victory at Congressional in 2011.Its a fair golf course, everything is straight out in front of you, said McIlroy, who won the U.S. PGA in 2012 and 2014 and has recorded three other top-eight finishes in his seven appearances.Theres no real hidden secrets to it and I feel thats what really lets me excel. I feel like I can play my game in PGA Championships. I can hit driver off the tee most times and from there, if I drive it well, I feel like I have a big advantage.Theres been times [this year] where I got a little bit of momentum and then sort of got set back a little bit. Its sort of been a little stop-start in a way. Im trying to stay as positive as I can. I feel like I am positive because my game is in good shape, but I guess Im just maybe running out of patience a little bit in trying to make it happen. As for a grade, Id say like a B- maybe. I could change that into an A+ on Sunday. Theres a lot of golf left, last major of the year, and I want to give it my all to get in the mix and try to win another one of these things before I have to wait another eight months to try to get another opportunity at Augusta next year.If McIlroy does not lift the enormous Wanamaker Trophy again on Sunday it will mean going two full years without a major title, the world No.4 having won the Open and U.S. PGA in 2014, with a first World Golf Championship title sandwiched in between for good measure.Since then the likes of Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson, Jason Day, Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson have demonstrated the strength in depth of world golf by winning majors, but McIlroy believes he should still expect to be winning one a year himself.Id love to sit here and say Im going to win a major every year, he added. I could retire at 40 and be very happy.I think it is realistic, I really do. Weve seen in the past that is achievable. Thats the benchmark. Its hard but I guess from 2011-14 I averaged a major a year.Theres no reason to think that I cant do that for the foreseeable future. I have to play my best golf and sometimes its hard to come up with your best golf each and every week. I definitely think its attainable.McIlroy has finished third and fifth in his two events since missing the cut in the U.S. Open and admits he was motivated by being left trailing an amazing 16 shots behind Open champion Stenson at Royal Troon.I think any time you walk away from a big tournament and you havent lifted a trophy, its going to motivate you, McIlroy added. How can you not be motivated by watching that golf on the Sunday of the Open Championship with Phil [Mickelson] and Henrik? Just going blow for blow down the stretch, that can only give you motivation and get the juices flowing. You see guys and sometimes you think that should be me and it gives you a bit of a kick in the ass to get out there and go practice.McIlroy also has added motivation to get into contention and earn a late tee time for Sundays final round, revealing he has tickets to watch fellow Northern Irishman Carl Framptons world title boxing fight on Saturday. If everything goes to plan I will be able to get to the Barclays Centre [in nearby New York] to cheer him on, McIlroy added. Ive never been to one of his fights before so hopefully Ill have a late tee time on Sunday. COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Texas A&M Aggies recorded their second consecutive shutout in a 1-0 win over the Little Rock Trojans at Ellis Field Friday evening.Emily Bates got a Trojan horse past the gates in the 49th minute for the lone goal. The mercurial sophomore controlled possession to the right of the penalty box after a defender knocked the ball away from Jordan Hill. Bates dribbled across the top of the box before sending a left-footed rocket from just right of the arc. Little Rock goalkeeper Sara Small had no chance to make a save on the bender that found the left upper 90 for Bates first goal of the season.Playing without the services of center backs Ashlynn Harryman and McKayla Paulson and defensive midfielder Stephanie Malherbe, the Maroon and White kept a clean sheet, allowing just one shot-on-goal in the match. A defensive corps that included Grace Wright, Kendall Ritchie, Margaret Schmidt, Grace Piper, Callyn Walton, Grace Cory and Kate Hajdu throughout the night, allowed just six shots on the evening to help goalkeeper Danielle Rice record the shutout.Rice earned her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career. Rice made the big play when it counted. In the 53rd minute, Little Rocks Caitlyn Eddy unleashed a missile from 20 yards. Her shot was heading just south of the crossbar, but Rice was able to make a leaping punch to knock the ball off the crossbar and to the safety of a clear six-yard box.Haley Pounds made Small work to keep the score at 1-0. In the 55th minute she pounded a free kick from 25 yards that found its way through the wall and caused Small to hit the deck for the save. In the 60th minute, Pounds hit a left footer from near the location of Bates goal, but the Trojans keeper was able to get her mitts on the ball that bent to the center of the goal.Texas A&M (3-2-0) owned advantages in shots (13-6) and shots-on-goal (6-2), but the pesky Trojans managed a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. The first half was a defensive sttruggle, with the teams combining for five shots.ddddddddddddThe Aggies held the edge in shots (4-1) with Bates getting the only shot-on-goal with a header in the 24th minute. The contest got chippy in the second half with Little Rock (3-3-0) drawing nine fouls and two yellow cards while Texas A&M did not incur a whistle in the second stanza. The Aggies return to action Sunday when they host the Illinois Fighting Illini in a 6 pm contest at Ellis Field.TEXAS A&M QUOTESHead Coach G Guerrieri On the message at half time and the adjustments going into the second half... Effort - plain and simple. If you want a great example of effort, look at Emily Bates. Emily won the game for us. She played like Emily Bates can. In the first half, we were kind of on cruise control. Little Rock came in with a good game plan. They were organized and they were tough. It took a world class goal to score and thats what Emily did for us.On the defense and the shutout... I think anytime you build up 180 minutes of scoreless ball it is a good sign. We are going to have to come out and play really well on Sunday because Illinois is a much different team than we played tonight. They are going to bring a lot of challenges and ask a lot of questions of us. We better be ready to bring the same energy that we had in the second half to the whole game on Sunday.Sophomore forward Emily Bates On her thoughts when she got chance for shot on goal... The first half was pretty frustrating for us offensively, so I just wanted to get anything on frame that would make the goalkeeper do some work.On halftime adjustments and what coaches told the team... The message was to bring the energy. We were slow and lackadaisical in the first half. We pushed another person forward because they were putting so many defenders behind the ball. I think that really helped us offensively. ' ' '
