Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will need to spend in the summer to enhance the clubs chances of competing in the latter stages of the Champions League, according to Nigel Winterburn. The Gunners were beaten 2-0 by Barcelona at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, leaving Wengers side with a huge uphill task in their bid to secure a quarter-final berth. Arsenal have not progressed past the last-16 stage of Europes elite competition since 2010 and Winterburn feels his former club must invest in the playing squad to stand any chance of progressing further in the competition in the future. Alexis Sanchez failed to find the back of the net against his former club at the Emirates Stadium You could sense from Arsene Wengers interview that he felt Arsenal had wasted an opportunity last night, the former Arsenal defender told Sky Sports News HQ. Its easy to analyse after a game and say if wed had a 20-goal-a-season striker, would he have taken those chances, [but] we just dont know that. Theyve come up short again in the last-16 so that says to Wenger hes going to have to look at that at the end of the season. Same old story for Arsenal? We look back at Arsenals recent Champions League knockout defeats... If they are going to move on from where they are and really be considered as one of the favourites for the competition, they are going to have to improve the squad again and I think Wenger knows that. But at this moment in time, what he needs is the support of all the supporters because they have a huge 12 games coming up in the league and they are still in the FA Cup. Then we can really analyse where Arsenal came up short in the Champions League. Lionel Messi scored twice to give Barcelona a two goal first-leg advantage Arsenal will now turn their attentions back to the Premier League title race and their clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 1pm. Despite giving his backing to Wenger, Winterburn fully expects Arsenals performance to be scrutinised if they fail to pick up a victory over an under-achieving United team. Louis van Gaal is under pressure with speculation that he will be leaving at the end of the season, Winterburn added. Wenger believes Arsenal could have beaten Barcelona in their Champions League last-16 first leg From Arsenals point of view, people are going to be scrutinising to see where they sit in the title race and if Arsenal dont win a game, there will be a lot of analysis. Arsenal are in a new period, from last season to next season and the end of Weners contract. There is money at the club and they expect Arsenal to challenge for the title. PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus acknowledged talk is cheap. And this time the Buffalo Bills defensive tackle said he means it when discussing how hell respond from being suspended for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy for a second consecutive year.I really dont have much to say. Words really dont mean anything now, Dareus said after practice Wednesday. Its all action. And thats what Im going to do. Im going to come back and do the best I can.Dareus was contrite and embarrassed a day after the Bills announced their top-paid player was suspended without pay for the first four games of the season.Dareus said the suspension resulted from missing a drug test. He added he was first notified about the disciplinary action on Saturday, following Buffalos preseason-opening 19-18 loss to Indianapolis.Under NFL rules, missing a test is the same as testing positive.Saying everyone makes dumb decisions, Dareus has since apologized to his teammates, Bills staff and owners, as well as his family and fans.General manager Doug Whaley said hes frustrated and disappointed, but added Dareus has the teams support because hes family and were going to stick by family. That doesnt mean Whaleys not concerned about the actions of a player who a year ago signed a seven-year, $104 million contract extension. Were going to hold him accountable from here on out. And hes going to hold himself accountable, Whaley said Hes got to take a step himself. And its got to be on him.Dareus is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and has been a starter since Buffalo drafted him with the No. 3 pick in 2011.Last year, Dareus was suspended for the season-opener for violation of the substance abuse policy. He had been arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia after being stopped by Alabama State Police in May 2014.Dareus avoided trial, during which he would have faced felony drug charges, by agreeing to enter an NFL substance abuse program. That wasnt his only run-in with the law.In AApril 2015, he reached a plea agreement to have misdemeanor charges dropped for crashing his Jaguar into a tree near a busy suburban intersection the previous spring.ddddddddddddCoach Rex Ryan takes Dareus at his word that hell do better, while acknowledging some might not believe him.Theres going to be some people that are cynical of him. Theres going to be people that will never give him the benefit of the doubt anymore, Ryan said. But for the majority of people, its more of a show-me thing. And I believe that moving forward this young man will learn from this experience and become a better person for it.The key, Ryan said, is for Dareus to make better choices with his life and understand how his actions impact the team.We all care a great deal for Marcell, Ryan said. We want to see this be a thing thats behind him once and for all, that this never happens again to him.Backup Corbin Bryant is expected to start in place of Dareus. Its a familiar role for Bryant, who last year started nine of Buffalos final 10 games after starter Kyle Williams sustained a season-ending knee injury. Another option is rookie third-round pick Adolphus Washington, who has spent time with the starters in training camp.Dareus suspension represents another blow to a defense that has already been thinned by injury.Rookie first-round pick, outside linebacker Shaq Lawson, had shoulder surgery in May and will miss at least the first month of the season. And second-round pick, inside linebacker Reggie Ragland, will miss the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee 10 days ago. Both were projected to start.Dareus becomes Buffalos second player to earn a four-game suspension to open this season. Last month, the NFL issued backup running back Karlos Williams had a similar suspension for violating the substance abuse policy.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
