Claire Williams says her familys team knew Nico Rosberg would be a future world champion when it gave the German his Formula One debut in 2006.Rosberg clinched the 2016 crown with a gutsy performance at Abu Dhabi, claiming the podium finish he needed to beat Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to the title. The German made his debut ten years ago for the Williams team his father, Keke Rosberg, won the world championship with in 1982.Though he set a fastest lap on his debut in Bahrain, the younger Rosbergs success was limited to two podium finishes at Williams, with a move to Mercedes in 2010 eventually paving the way to victories and the championship. When asked if he looked like a future champion when he joined the team Williams, the deputy team principal, said: Yeah, I think it was pretty clear. You know when there are certain drivers that come to you of that kind of material, and he was. I heard that hes won what 23 races, the highest number of races before winning a championship but then you have drivers that win world championships on less wins then youve ever heard of.Hes done a great job, hes done everything hes needed to do. For him he probably feels like its a long time in the making but he is a truly well deserving champion in this sport and I am really pleased for him.Williams thinks it is remarkable how Rosberg rose from the shadow of his father to become champion and says the German fully deserves the title, despite suggestions he only won due to reliability issues for teammate Hamilton throughout the year.I remember when he started his career at Williams. I was press officer at the time and they were doing a shoot-out with Nico and Nelson Piquet and I was there looking after them. Even from that point hes been absolutely charming. Hes been a great ambassador, hes a great all-rounder in Formula One for this sport and I think its a really well deserved world championship. He is the son of a former world champion. Keke was our world champion in 1982 and I think to achieve that and to step out of someones shadow, its not easy. Any child of someone famous has had those kinds of achievements in their life, its not easy to step out of their shadow and I think Nico has done everything that he has needed to do to prove that he is a worthy individual in his own right.I think that probably is as important to him as winning a world championship.
